Bummer: Chuck Thompson Has Passed On

I'm saddened to read that Chuck Thompson has died (Yahoo! News - Hall of Fame Sportscaster Thompson Dies). Chuck Thompson was the Voice of the Orioles on the radio and, along with Jon Miller, talked me through my introduction to Baseball and helped make me a fan of the Orioles. I'm still looking forward to the start of the season, but there's a hole now.

I think you should apply Mike. I think you'd make a good announcer. Sort of Dennis Miller-ish only without the annoying factor. You know you want to...

Can't say as I follow baseball well, but I can appreciate what you mean, "there's a hole now." Sorry to hear you've lost an icon of sorts. And though I don't follow closely, I do absolutely love the crack o' the bat. Looking forward with ya on that level.

Don't think I haven't thought about it, Del. I actually was in broadcasting for several years after college. If I had stayed in that field, though, I'd have had to move around several times to get ahead. At at about the time I needed to make the call, I fell in love with Karen and found Lewes, Delaware; two factors (the first, my lovely wife, being the more important factor) that made me want to settle down and sink roots.

And Veda, while I do enjoy baseball as a game, a big part of the attraction is the slow, ruminative pace that allows for story-telling and in-depth discussion of just about everything. That's why it's such a great sport for radio; a good part of the game is all in your head.
