Count Me in the "Reader" Column

The AP is reporting a poll that found that a quarter of US adults read no books in the last year.
The survey reveals a nation whose book readers, on the whole, can hardly be called ravenous. The typical person claimed to have read four books in the last year -- half read more and half read fewer. Excluding those who hadn't read any, the usual number read was seven.
That's not good. In an era in which we worry about our nation falling behind others economically, this slide away from knowledge and culture can only hurt us.

I am a reader. It is an activity that has given me joy, comfort, knowledge, and peace for almost 40 years now. (Assuming I date the start of my reading to around First Grade.) And I am probably ravenous reader. I probably average about one book each week.

It works for me.

I'm a reader too. Nobody reads daily newspapers anymore either...
It's terrible. You can't bring the computer into the bathroom with you...well, I guess you could, but...
If I only had the time I'd read three times as much as I do to make up for the others....

I must confess that I've left the printed version of the daily paper behind. Mostly because I can't get it to my door early enough to read it before heading off to work. I scan the News Journal and State News web sites (such as they are) instead.

This does not include our bi-weekly Cape Gazette, however, which Karen reads front to back each week and I delve into when I can as well.

Try paperbackswap.com. You can trade books for other books. I love it.

I say "Yaaayyy" for the readers still amongst us!! (Especially the kids!) Personally, I've been seeking a Twelve Step programme, intervention, pill, for bookaholics...mostly because not enough bookshelves, too many books and not knowing when time will run out for me to read them all yet I continue adding more.
