A Sign of Trouble?

This is probably way too over-simplified an analysis, but I can't help thinking that this image, from the News Journal's story on risky borrowing, is symptomatic of what our basic mistake was.

If we can't get the grammar right, what makes us think we can handle complex financial affairs?

What bugs me is that this mess was created by people who are actually really, really bright. All those guys from the best colleges that got into the cool grad school programs and got the fancy degrees and got the hot jobs. These are the guys that actually read the monetary and fiscal policy articles in the Economist, rather than skipping over them like the rest of us. Did the money just make them blind to the trouble they were getting into?
