Time to Turn the Page

New York Times columnist Tom Friedman makes a good point today: 9/11 is over.
9/11 has made us stupid. I honor, and weep for, all those murdered on that day. But our reaction to 9/11 — mine included — has knocked America completely out of balance, and it is time to get things right again.
I think he's right. We cannot forget, but we mustn't endlessly dwell on 9/11. It's starting to change who we are, and not for the good.

I gave up on Friedman after his drumming routine leading up to the invasion. Over the years his comments on progress in Iraq (it will only be another 6 months) have become a running gag commonly known as 6 months = 1 Friedman Unit.

I used to read him a lot and liked his reporting, but he lost all credibility for me shortly after this war began.

I think many of us have been over the 911 fear for a long time, but as long as Dubya keeps spewing 911 = Al Qaeda there are going to be folks who believe and be afraid.

IMHO our greatest fear ought to be the inevitable invasion of Iran planned by the Dick and the Chimp.
I'm just sayin'.

I think James Taranto says it well regarding this column:

Who is most stupid:

* America, for detaining terrorists at Guantanamo Bay?

* "A lot of the world," for imagining that "it's a place we send visitors who don't give the right answers at immigration"?

* Thomas Friedman, for recommending "dismantling Guantánamo Bay and replacing it with a free field hospital for poor Cubans"?

We report, you decide. Friedman then veers off into an Andy Rooneyesque list of gripes that have little to do with terror policy:

Look at our infrastructure. It's not just the bridge that fell in my hometown, Minneapolis. Fly from Zurich's ultramodern airport to La Guardia's dump. It is like flying from the Jetsons to the Flintstones.

It's even worse than that. Try flying form Zurich to La Guardia, and you'll find it can't be done. La Guardia is not an international airport!
